Respect Celebrating Fourth Year
and Issuing its 11th Edition
The
editorial committee of Respect, the Sudanese Journal
for Human Rights’ culture and Issues of Cultural
Diversity, and the Sudanese Society in Arts and
Humanities, are pleased to issue the 11th Issue of
the journal, which falls on the passing of four
years.
At a time
when our country is at a turning point in its modern
history whereby the question of identity and
cultural diversity continues to occupy its central
place between basic sudanese issues, comes this
edition of Respect with a main dossier tackling
"Multi-approach to the question of national identity
and issues of cultural diversity", submitted by
interested researchers, specialists and acivists
within various disciplines.
Coinciding with the issuance of this edition is the
passing of 20 years to the United Nations’
Convention on the Rights of the Child signed on 21
November 1989. So we are hereby keen to include
within the "Follow Up" section of the journal the
special report of the Organization of the United
Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued on this
occasion under the title of "Situation of Children
in the World" and at a time where we need to make
further efforts for the children of the Sudan who
are exposed to the effects of conflicts and crises
witnessed in our country, in terms of security,
health, nutrition, psychological effects and other
problems caused by these conditions. That is besides
their being, all over the country, victims to a
falling apart educational system and the constantly
deteriorating economic conditions.
Whereas
breaching of freedom of expression and freedom of
press is persistently perpetuated we publish, in the
"follow-ups" section, the report of the African
Centre for Justice and Peace on "The conditions of
freedom of expression and freedom of the press in
the Sudan for the period from the first of January
2009 to 30 September 2009".
On the
basis of our commitment to steer our country on the
direction of the path to democratic construction,
and at a moment whereby preparations for the
forthcoming elections are fraught with conditions of
the evident risks of fraud and misleading media, we
have, in the "follow-ups" section, published the
Arabic translation of the study issued by the
Institute of The Rift Valley which has been
commissioned by the International Development
Association under the title of "elections in Sudan:
learning from experience." This case-study
highlights our country’s legacy and experience in
electoral practice and accesses the present
generations to documented work that ensures our
peoples’ readiness and their ability to materialize
democratic construction.
Our
sincere thanks and appreciation are, eventually,
extended to the contributors to this edition’s main
dossier: Mekki Ali Idris, Rashid Mustafa Bakheit, Dr
Abdulbasit Mirghani, Taj Elsir Khaliha Awalla, Dr
Nahid Mohamed al-Hassan, Dr Abdullah Ali Ibrahim, Dr
Idriss Salem al-Hassan.
Our
thanks also goes to Mohamed Ahmed Mahmoud Abu Abdu
and Abdullah Adam Khatir for their contribution in
"the issues of democracy, development and peace" and
to Dr. Othman Ibrahim Othman for his participation
in our section on "education’s issues."
Finally
we, on the occasion of the passing of four years of
issuing Respect, express deep appreciation and
gratitude to all of those, Sudanese and non-Sudanese
writers, who have contributed to it and to everyone
who have supported us on the continuation of the
magazine’s issuing and thus assures the fulfilment
of its mission to promote the values of
multiculturalism and to join hands with all of those
who are seriously involved with sewing and
consolidating the culture of human rights into our
homeland’s soil and to all of the readers who have
assisted us via sustainable encouragement and
concern.
